I love things in print. I like flicking through a magazine, holding a photobook and contemplating the choice of paper for a particular image. I’ve always liked making books and for smaller projects I like making zines. I like moving mini printouts of images around, seeing what looks nice next to each other and the joy of eventually calculating the spacing correctly so it all lines up correctly when I print and fold it. It’s very satisfying. So I’ve started to make some little zines from my travels, starting with Greece.
I decided to make a small zine for each city/town we visited. A pocket-sized booklet with images of things that caught my eye: a nice view, petals that seemed to greet us at each destination, or little things that make me ponder, like ‘who folded the origami bird in the gutter’?
It’s hard to distill an entire trip into just a few images but it’s a good challenge in editing and a nice thing to produce without using reams of paper. There’s a QR code on each one that takes you to my full notes about each destination too, each of which has a lot more images.
Each zine is full colour digital print on 170gsm recycled uncoated paper, 297x105mm when laid flat, folded into 8 A7 pages.
If you’d like to see more of any of the zines you can explore them in my TRIVIAL MATTER online shop here. If you’re based in the UK they are available to purchase directly there, too, or if you’re outside the UK you can buy them through Etsy* (due to customs etc.)
If you’d like to see more about my three week trip in Greece you can find all my posts about it here.
Visit the TRIVIAL MATTER online shop here to find out more and buy directly if you’re in the UK, or through Etsy for those outside the UK (due to customs etc.)
Notes on Travel is a blog by photographer Jayne Lloyd, noting the things I found useful to know when I was travelling.
